AFCON exit causes Algeria to break company with coach Belmadi

After the team’s unfortunate elimination from the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Cote d’Ivoire on Wednesday, the Algerian Football Federation (FAF) and coach Djamel Belmadi reached a mutual agreement to go their separate ways.

FAF president Walid Sadi stated in a statement, “I met with Djamel Belmadi to discuss the consequences of this bitter elimination. We have reached an agreement for an amicable separation, concluding the coach’s contract with the FAF.”

Algeria exited the Cote d’Ivoire group stage for the second time in a row after drawing 1-1 with Angola and 2-2 with Burkina Faso, then losing 1-0 to Mauritania, which was ranked last in Group D, according to Xinhua.

Belmadi’s almost six-year term in Algeria has been clouded with controversy. In addition to the team’s elimination in the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifying, he suffered two more setbacks in the tournament’s group stage after aiding the Greens in their 2019 AFCON championship success.
